The office of the individual who has been elected to serve as the administrative head and chief executive officer of the state's department of education with responsibility for supervising elementary, secondary, adult and other education programs within the state; establishing, maintaining and inspecting public schools; developing course content standards; supporting effective professional development programs for teachers and other educators; holding local educational agencies accountable for student achievement; enforcing provisions of the state's education code; and providing leadership and resources to support continuing reform and improvement in public education for students at all levels.
