Definition
Programs that provide organized opportunities for individuals to pursue their interest in rocks, minerals, gemstones, meteorites, fossils and other geological specimens, often through the medium of a club or society which is under the leadership of people who are knowledgeable in the subject. Activities may include sharing information about different types of rocks, how to identify them, how to display and/or artistically use them, and the basics of collecting; field trips to places where collectible rocks and minerals can be found; visits to stores where specimens may be purchased; and opportunities for members to buy, trade or sell specimens. Included are Internet-based virtual clubs, WebRings devoted to the subject and clubs where members meet face-to-face.
