Definition
Programs that teach individuals with hearing impairments to communicate using a sign language version of a spoken language. Unlike the sign languages that have evolved naturally in deaf communities and have distinct spatial structures, manually coded languages are the invention of hearing people and primarily follow the grammar of the written form of the spoken language.
