Definition
Programs that issue severe thunderstorm watches when weather conditions are such that a severe thunderstorm (damaging winds 58 miles per hour or more, or hail 3/4 of an inch in diameter or greater) is likely to develop and/or thunderstorm warnings when a severe thunderstorm has been sighted in a particular area or is indicated by weather radar. Thunderstorms bring heavy rains, strong winds, hail, lightning and tornadoes. Thunderstorm advisories may also include safety instructions for people who are in the immediate area.
