Definition
Programs that offer the screening procedure for the early detection of prostate cancer or other abnormalities which involves a manual examination of the rectal area. During a DRE, the doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the patient's rectum to feel for lumps, enlargements, or areas of hardness that might indicate prostate cancer. A digital rectal examination is recommended annually for men older than age 40.
