Definition
Individuals who are responsible for a variety of administrative and clerical duties necessary to run an organization efficiently. They serve as an information manager for an office, schedule meetings and appointments, handle travel arrangements, organize and maintain paper and electronic files, manage projects, conduct research, prepare statistical reports, provide orientation and training for other staff and provide information via the telephone, regular mail and e-mail. Some secretarial staff specialize in specific areas or handle more complex tasks. Legal secretaries prepare legal papers and correspondence of a legal nature such as summonses, complaints, motions and subpoenas; and must be familiar with legal terminology, procedures and documents as well as legal research. Medical secretaries perform duties utilizing specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic or laboratory procedures.
