Definition
Individuals who write original plays including tragedies, comedies and dramas, or adapt thematic material from fictional, historical or narrative sources for dramatic presentation. They are responsible for all aspects of the play including the structure, the setting, the storyline, dialogue, stage direction and character development; and must have a depth of theatrical knowledge including acting, lighting, directing, technical coordination and casting as well as creative writing ability in order to be successful. Playwrights generally revise the script during rehearsals and preparation for the initial opening.
