Definition
A disorder in which children exhibit a persistent refusal to speak in almost all social situations, including at school, despite the ability to comprehend spoken language and to speak. These children may communicate via gestures, by nodding or shaking the head, or, in some cases, by monosyllabic or short, monotonous utterances.
