Definition
The surgical removal of a fetus by means of an incision into the uterus, usually by way of the abdominal wall. The most frequent cause for a cesarean section is a fetus that is too large to be delivered through the pelvic outlet, a pelvis that is abnormally small or a combination of these factors. Some physicians believe that a breech presentation of the fetus is best handled by a cesarean section.
