Definition
Rh incompatibility develops when an Rh negative mother carries an Rh positive fetus. Fetal red blood cells cross the placenta and enter the maternal circulation system stimulating maternal antibody production against the Rh factor. These antibodies cross the placenta to the fetal circulation system and destroy fetal red blood cells.
