Definition
Programs that seek to prevent the loss of fertile land to desert conditions by implementing a variety of mitigation strategies including irrigation, planting of trees and grasses, erection of barriers to secure sand dunes, and careful management of water resources. The desertification process, which is generally caused by poor land management or climate change, involves deterioration in the texture, nutrient content and fertility of the soil and consequent loss of vegetative cover.
