Definition
An acute infection of the lungs that is caused by the microorganism pneumocystis carinii which is thought to be a protozoan. It is characterized by slight if any fever, nonproductive cough, rapid respiration and labored breathing, and is only dangerous to debilitated children and immunodeficient adults.
