Definition
A highly fatal disease caused by Yersinia pestis infection. Symptoms include high fever, restlessness, staggering gait, mental confusion, prostration, delirium, shock and coma. Plague exists in several forms including bubonic plague, which is characterized by acutely inflamed lymph nodes (buboes), and pneumonic plague, which is characterized by extensive lung involvement and which can be passed from person to person by droplets.
