Diabetic Retinopathy

A complication of diabetes affecting the retina that may cause blurred vision or, in severe cases, blindness. The condition is characterized by deterioration of the blood vessels nourishing the retina which may lead to ruptures which bleed into the vitreous (the clear, gel-like substance that fills the center of the eye) or scarring which can cause retinal detachments and other problems. Pregnancy and high blood pressure can worsen the condition.
