Definition
Programs that provide information and guidance for state residents who have been renting their homes or apartments as of a specified date during the tax year and who want to apply for the renters' tax credit program. The program is based on the recognition that renters indirectly pay property taxes as part of their rent and thus should have some protection, as do homeowners. The renter's tax credit is generally not a payment that individuals receive, but a deduction that renters can make on their state income tax forms though in some jurisdictions renters receive a check from the tax authority. Renters who owe no taxes may get no benefits depending on state tax laws. Income restrictions may apply.
