Definition
Programs that specialize in providing therapeutic interventions that are based on the theories of Alfred Adler which hold that the child reacts to its inadequacy relative to its adult parents by overcompensating and striving for superiority, resulting in a complex which is maladaptive. Subsequently, with the development of a social conscience, the individual's superiority complex comes into conflict with his/her altruistic and socializing needs. This conflict between two innate drive systems further intensifies the maladaptive structures. The task of the therapist is to help clients overcome their early feelings of inferiority and potentiate their societal needs.
