Definition
Programs that help nonprofit organizations and other groups that are considering implementation of a volunteer program determine whether and how they should proceed. Conditions that contribute to a successful volunteer program include a stable organization with healthy communication between staff and management; explicit management support for volunteer involvement; consistency between goals for volunteer involvement and staff roles; staff participation in decisions regarding how to involve, supervise, coach and evaluate volunteers; a workable plan for volunteer orientation and training; and designation of a person, either staff or volunteer, to serve as volunteer coordinator or manager.
