Definition
Programs that provide telephone and/or in-person information and medical consultation for pregnant women, women of reproductive age considering pregnancy and health care providers regarding the potential risks of birth defects due to exposure to specific medications, industrial chemicals, infectious agents, diagnostic radiation exposure, maternal illness, alcohol, illegal drugs and other teratogens that may affect the formation of the developing baby. Activities may include a detailed interview regarding the individual and the specific exposure, a thorough review of the relevant literature, a risk assessment report and, if necessary, a referral to a high-risk pregnancy center, a genetic counseling program, a mental health center or other community services.
